Art by MattBicknese Art by MattBicknese
Because art can be defined as anything, and no one can say what is and isn't art. Even if you mock art by shitting on a canvas, you reinforce the flexibility and variety that art provides. Thus, I give you art.

Just because there's some confusion, I'm not angry about it. In fact I think this where the beauty in art lies. Not specifically as shit on a canvas, but the fact that it can be anything :)

I'm actually horribly ill-informed on movies, and never heard of it until I just googled it. Why do you ask?

There is a scene that I think relates to your work here.
"Deprived of quill and ink, he writes with wine, then blood, then his own feces".
The Marquis definitely challenged the idea of art, and censorship.

I can, anything someone wants to call art, or anything someone does not want to call art.

Yeah, that's basically my view on it too. Art is just a subjective term, so it's up to the viewer to decide what is and isn't art.

A while ago I attempted to define art as something someone creates to show a message or get a reaction.

And with that same logic, I reasoned that that meant trolling is a form of art.

Yeah, they call it the art of trolling after all lol. But I like that definition a lot. Then again I find art in nature, in things no one really "created", so that's a part of it I still struggle with. I don't think it can be defined really, or at least not beyond a personal level.

I didn't consider what people find in nature could be art, that gives me food for thought.

Oh yeah, I know. And I don't think it's bad really. In fact I think one of the greatest things about art is how it can anything, there are no rules :)

A deviation from a user on this site was stolen by another user on the same site and considers it his own.

Absolutely. In fact I wrote a journal post about how he really challenged the definition of art. But I believe art can be found anywhere, at anytime, in even the most common of things. How about you?

I agree that the dada-ists really revolutionized how we think, and how we make of art. In fact, every rising artistic movement in history effected society somehow, which is what makes them special to this day. Though I generally do not like "artwork" that looks crude and seems like the artist put no effort at all, but that doesn't mean there is no serious intent or message behind it.

Usually, people who seem to put no apparent effort have, as you put it, thought about it for a long while. Duchamp and many other dada-ists have deconstructed our beliefs and new ways are found every day of what "art" is... in fact, one may ultimately find that the only question could be "what ISN'T art?" And you will find that the answers vary from person to person because of their conception of what art is... take the sum of what art is and you'll be still left with lots of unexplored avenues.
